Coursework Evaluation

Overview

Overall I am pleased with the outcome of my coursework blog as it shows the amount of work I put into the course and shows how I have progressed with my Photoshop skills over the year, I have achieved some complex pieces and some powerful pieces to portray what my original task was.

 Strengths and Weaknesses

My main strengths with my coursework are creating many different contrasting images based on my tasks however my annotation and written work is very weak. I think that the use of following online tutorials but changing parts of them to make my work more unique allowed me to experiment with new and unusual Photoshop techniques to make my work seem more interesting and different from other peoples work. However I chose to follow some that were far to complex for my current ability’s, meaning that some of my work came out messy and a much lowers quality to other pieces.

How artists connect to final pieces

Many of my pieces did not actually relate to the artists I looked at as although I did like their techniques and thought they looked suitable for the task, I experimented with a wide range of styles to create a strong contrasting final piece, I used some basic techniques and looks that the artists created however I changed a lot of these to make my work seem more original to theirs.

Reflection on areas where work has progressed

At the start of the course I was creating quite simple images using simple techniques, however towards the end I began creating much more complex designs that were much more interesting. The quality of my photography has also progressed throughout the course, as I experimented with using props, different backdrops and lighting, and also different angles and ways of taking the images, to create a contrast in my work rather than having all of my primary images looking much the same. My choice in artists also improved as I began to choose artists that I liked but also that relate closely to what I aimed to create for my final piece. My techniques I have used have also progressed as I have learnt new ways of doing things that allow much more freedom when editing images to create a more complex original designs.

Materials

The main materials I used for the course were photography and Photoshop, I experimented with some other materials such as hand drawing and printing, however I did not like using these techniques and had little ability in them, and so I continued to use Photoshop throughout the course as my main material.

How my design will work in a real context

I think my designs could work in a real context as the logos are simple enough to be photocopied and printed many times over, my advertising is usualy quite bright and bold, and my final piece had an unusual cover which could attract attention, as throughout the book is much the same in that it is contrasting and some aspects are quite unusual.

2nd zine with updated images

For this updated version of the zine all I have done is updated some of the images with different font size and style to make them seem more appealing and also allow the main image to be more dominant rather than the text.

1st Zine

Overall I like how my final piece has come out, there are some slight changes I would make to it however this is only slight adjustments on images such as font size and style.

Some of my most successful images I think were the blue fantasy page (Pages 4 and 5) as it is a complex image that shows how much time was spent on it, and the two plain images of the girl with Dr.Martens in the forest (Pages 16 and 17) which although are simple, portray the fashion side to Dr.Martens allowing me to cover many different cultures based on DM’s throughout the zine.

Overall i’m pleased with the zine and there is little I would change on it.

Overall I feel this image was successful however not appropriate for my brief, as it is mainly showing an experimentation with lighting and layer masks, and the subject is not wearing Dr.Martens.

I like the lighting effect I created towards the right of the subject, which i created by using a white feathered brush to make a big white dot, and then used the liquidify to bend it into a curve, then used layer masks to colour it. I also like how the lighting adds more drama to the subject.

However I do not like how the lighting covers alot of the subjects face and makes him seem slightly distorted, making the image a lower quality

Out of the two images, I think the bottom one came out the most sucessful as the colours are much more vibrant with the Cross process effect rather than the more dull looking image on top with a vintage effect. In the general image, I like the angle the image is taken from as it puts alot of focus on the Dr.Martens which is the topic of my zine, however I do not like the lense flare that goes over the subjects face as it hides part of the image.

Opening and Closing page for zine

I like this design as it is unusual and also displays an aspect of rebelion which is releated to the image of Dr.Martens, and so I think it suits the general scene, this was also a good way to demonstrate my photoshop skills by using a blend of textures, gradients, and different images of fire that I also used the warp tool on to blend them with the text. Overall I think these images were sucessful, however I could have spent more time on the closing page to makesure the fire blends correctly with the text to make it look realistic

These two images were mainly an experimentation with textures and layer masks to create the background for the images, however my favorite part of the image is the animal head on the human body, but I could have spent more time on the horse head to make it look more realistic and experimented with the text more. Overall I like this image as it has an 80’s style to it but also looks slightly destroyed, giving the punk, Dr.Marten style to it, I also like it because it is an unusal image.

For this image, I returned to using my skills gained from the induction at the begingin of my year to create this clone photo, I like this image because the copyed images blend well with the origional to make the image look much more proffesional and realistic, origionaly I only had one image (bottom) but I experiemtented with some different text to see which image looks more sucessful. The is nothing I do not like about this image, it is a simple design that looks effective.

These two images are based on a quote from the Dr.Marten website, I experimented with colour, font, and size to create the best image, overall I prefer the top image as it flows better and looks much less crowded than the smaller image below. If I did this again, I would use the green colour again, but make the text smaller to space it out, and use a more handwritten font to make it look more vintage and related to Dr.Martens

I like this image because of its simplicity, as it is just a mirrored image, and because of the quote as it matches the style of the image, I added a vignette as it makes the image look warmer and suite the quote. If I did this image again, I would use the content aware tool to remove the dog in the background. Out of the two images, I prefer the bottom image as the image does not look over crowded as the text is smaller.
